History and good times combine at the Backstreet Pub – a cool and almost hidden little pub in the heart of Downtown Beaufort that’s tucked away behind the equally iconic Clawson’s Restaurant. Well-named for its subtle location on the “back street,” this pub has been called the “friendliest, funkiest little bar from Maine to Venezuela.”
The bar is actually housed within a 100-year-old former bakery, and has remained renowned among sailors who cruise along the Intracoastal Waterway, and who have adorned the walls with nautical memorabilia from their journeys. As a result, the vibe is a fun mix of locals, vacationers, captains, and deep sea divers, who all swap tales of seafaring adventures over a round or two. There’s other ways to have fun other than the engaging conversation, however, and Backstreet Pub has unique diversions, like cribbage, for patrons as well. In addition to the everyday enjoyable scene, the bar also hosts some of the coolest local bands in the area, and is known for its Wednesday Night "Hoot Nites," where local musicians gather for improv jams on the pretty adjacent courtyard. Boasting a very fun atmosphere where the local history shines, the Backstreet Pub is a must-stop for visitors who want a bar scene with a heavy dose of authentic local flavor.
