Sanitary Fish Market and Restaurant

One of the largest and probably best known seafood restaurant on the North Carolina coast, The Sanitary opened in February 1938.

Ted Garner and Tony Seamon, Morehead City businessmen formed a partnership that lasted some forty years until Garner's death in 1978.

Advertising that its entrees "slept in the ocean last night," it became a huge success. The original building, which they rented for $5.50 per week gave way to a newly constructed building in 1949. With additions built on through the years, the seating capacity has increased to over 600.

Tony Seamon was the first person to cross the Morehead City-Beaufort bridge when it was completed in 1927, and the first to drive across the replacement bridge. Ted Garner, Jr. purchased the business in 1979, but Tony's name remains synonymous with this historic landmark.
